I need info about striping a renault megane/scenic 1.4 16v?

i need a bit of info on striping a engine for a renault megane scenic 1.4 16v. it died last week and the RAC said the timing belt has gone and pretty much destroyed the engine. i`ve just started to take the case off the timing belt and upto now looks intact but i`ve only seen the top bit. what else could it be if the timing belt is alright? i`ve heard the belt can jump and send the valves out of sync slighlty ???
